Arfan Khan and Sappho Dias have successfully procured the release of prominent Burmese political prisoner

Sappho Dias successfully procured the release of prominent Burmese political prisoner Kyaw Hla Aung last week, following a submission of a Petition, on 27th March 2014, of Unlawful and Arbitrary Detention to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Kyaw Hla Aung is a respected Community Leader and defender of human rights of the Arakanese Muslims in the Rakhine State. He had been recognised as a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International and such was his stature that he had been visited by the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar. He had been arrested on 15th July 2013. On previous occasions Kyaw Hla Aung had served a prison sentence of 16 years for asserting human rights for the Arakanese Muslim Community.
