R(Hardy) v Leicestershire County Council concerned a high profile judicial review challenge to the County Council’s proposal to close an important museum, the Snibston Discovery Museum.

Although the courts have dealt with many cuts cases in relation to library closures, Blake J took the opportunity to lay down new principles for museum closures.

The claimant alleged that that the Council had conducted an unlawful consultation, failed to comply with the public sector equality duty and breached the procedures under the Community Right to Challenge in accordance with the Localism Act.

Blake J dismissed the claim and the museum has now closed, although the claimant is pursuing an appeal.
